Help us make Maps better

Community edits allow you to modify the information you see on Google Maps to make it more accurate for everyone. Find out how you can:

Add a point of interest that you think your neighbors would want to find.

If you are a business owner, you can add and verify your business to Google Maps using the Local Business Center.

To let us know about a point of interest other than a business, use Report a Problem and select the 'point of interest' option.

Or, add a place directly to Google Maps:

  1. Search for the place you wish to add to determine if it is already listed.
  2. If it isn't, in the left panel, click Add a place to the map. A marker appears in the center of the map.
  3. Drag the marker to the correct location or enter an address. Click Next.
  4. Add details for the place and click Save.

Note - Currently you can add places only in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Improve underlying map data if a road label is incorrect or missing.

If you notice that our underlying map data is incorrect, you can report that error to the provider of that data. Our data providers are listed in the lower right-hand corner of the map. In some cases, you'll have to zoom in to see the specific provider for that area.

Some providers include:
  • Google (U.S. Only): Report a Problem allows the reporting of map issues
  • Google: Map Maker, where available, allows editing of base map data
  • Tele Atlas: report a map error their using their Map Insight system
Other providers will be added as tools become available for users to submit corrections. If you don't find your local data provider in the above list, please locate the correct data provider using the instructions above and contact them directly.

Move the marker for a location if it's been positioned a little off.

If you notice that a marker is positioned incorrectly, you can move it to the right spot on the map.

  1. (Optional) Switch your view to Satellite. This allows you to move the marker accurately, as you can see both roads and satellite imagery.
  2. After you search for a place, click the the appropriate marker. The info window appears.
  3. If the marker is in the wrong location, click Edit.
  4. Click Move marker. Drag the marker to the correct location. Use the X to help you place the marker. Consider placing it at the entrance of the location, as this helps improve the accuracy of our driving directions.
  5. Click Save.

Notes:

  • If you move the marker more than 200 meters away from its original location, we'll need to review this change before it can appear in Google Maps.
  • If you can't seem to edit a business location, this is because the business owner has already verified information for that business in the Local Business Center, and verified listings can only be edited by the owner. If a listed business is yours, claim your business.
  • If you do not see an 'Edit' link in the info window for a location, you can always use the 'Report a problem' link to let us know about an error in Google Maps.

Edit details for a local business that you notice are incorrect.

If you are a business owner and have already claimed and verified your listing, follow these instructions to edit it.

You can edit details such as the business name, address, phone, category or website:

  1. After you search for a place, click the the appropriate marker. The info window appears.
  2. If the details for the place are wrong, click Edit.
  3. Click Edit details and make the appropriate changes.
  4. Click Preview and review your edits.
  5. Click Save.
If you are the owner of this business, feel free to use community edits to fix your listing, and then claim your business. Businesses whose listings have been claimed and verified through the Local Business Center can't be edited by the community, or flagged for removal. Claiming your listing through the Local Business Center is the only way to prevent community edits to your listing.

Tell us about a listing on Google Maps that's closed down, is a duplicate of another listing, or contains private information.

If you see a place on the map that isn't there anymore (or was never there in the first place), let us know about it. Here's how:

  1. After you search for a place, click the appropriate marker. The info window appears.
  2. Click Edit > Report a problem.
  3. Select the issue that pertains to this place and add any comment you have.
  4. Click Report a problem. Google will investigate the place you have reported.

Businesses whose listings have been claimed and verified through the Local Business Center don't allow users to report a problem. Visit the Local Business Center to find out how to claim and verify your business listing, or how to remove it.

Find your edits

To view a history of the edits made to a particular place, click Edit then View history in its info window. To see a list of the edits you've made, click My Profile at the top right of your screen.

Other ways to edit

Google Map Maker allows you to contribute, share and edit map information for 174 countries and territories. Map Maker provides you with a set of tools to create and edit map features and improve the quality of maps and local information in your region. Click here to find out how to get started.

Go beyond edits

Community edits appear in Google Maps search results. You adjust marker locations that others can view and search. However, you can also highlight locations, areas and routes, and share them with others by creating a custom map with My Maps. Points that you create on your custom map won't appear in Google Maps search results, and you'll be able to send a direct link to only the people you wish to share it with.

To access this feature, click the My Maps tab in Google Maps. Or, learn more about custom maps.
